First Rough Pass

Well hello there! Yea, that was a bit of a hiatus in posts. Been busy with work, but I'm back and my goal is to be consistent in the next couple of weeks. Motivate me to get this shot done.

Just another update. Essentially my first spline pass with some texturing. No updates with the guy, just working on the acting beats of the women. I've got plenty to do, but it's getting there. I'll have something new for you guys next week.

As promised (a little late, but better late then never) an update.

My main focus was the acting beats and the eye direction for the female character (Hannah), but at the same time still trying to keep it simple and acting within the poses. It's coming along, but so much to do. Next step: THE DREADED SPLINGING PASS!!! Stay tuned

Hey Everyone!

It's been pretty crazy at the o'l R&H for quite sometime. Finished up on my marketing work for Hop and went on to some DVD extra's which will most likely appear on a later post, but for now.........

Personal Work!!!

It's just the first pass of blocking, so there's not much going on right now. My main focus is to keep the poses simple and clear.

This shot has been quite a challenge so far. I've gone through three blocking passes to get to this point, but I have learned a butt load doing it. I'll hopefully post on a regular basis (once a week) and bring this blog back to life. Stay tuned to your local broadcasting...

Exciting News: Round #2

Hey Guys,

I have been a bit flaky on the posting, so I apologize, but I come with exciting news. (hmm... this seems familiar... anyway)

Most of you know, but for those that haven't found out yet, I am a Character Animator at Rhythm & Hues!!! I just started this week and it's pretty awesome. Currently I'm working on Hop. It's going to be a lot of fun. Here's the teaser trailer:

Funny enough, I did a couple of shots on there as a technical animator (the close up hand shot and the very last shot of the sequence.)

Also, almost done with AM... only a few weeks left and I CAN'T WAIT!

Anyway, going back into the cave to finish up on my schooling's. I'll post up my final work shortly. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Class 5: That's a wrap!

Stick a fork in Class 5... it's Done! Surprisingly quick too. I want to say Thank you to my Mentor, Morgan Kelly, for showing us some awesome tips on acting and subtlety. That class was a great learning experience.

As for my shot, I still have a some polishing here and there, but it's just about done. I think the one major thing I've learned from this class is the importance of micro-expressions and the little subtle acting choices that make your shot stand out from the crowd. I see it as the icing on the cake, the cherry on top or the olive oil on the hummus... it just makes it so much more tastier then the average shot.

Anyway, this is a double header of a post since I've been falling behind. First, my class 4 progress reel:

I can't tell you how much I've learned in the past two classes. And I can't wait to find out what next on the horizon for class 6. So very excited!!!

Pushing into the Polish

Hey Guys,

Here's the next pass of my shot. I'm kind of on a wave pattern right now. The first shot has moved onto polishing. The last shot is in the refining phase and the middle shot is somewhere in limbo. I think I have a pretty good grasp on things, but I say that now with only two weeks left before the "final" is due. Bring on the stress!!! Anyway, I will hopefully have a next pass up by Sunday. Still Refining

Here is the next pass of my sequence. It's a week late, but at least I'm posting something. I refined the first shot a little more and pulled the seconded shot out of blocking. I found out that the hardest part of shot two was locking down the weight in the walk. I knew that I couldn't move on until I had the mechanics locked down. It's getting there... "Feelin' Funny" Blocking/Refining

Here is another pass at my two person dialogue shot. The way they have us approach the assignment is by splitting up the sequence and treating each cut like it's own shot. It's an interesting and intense strategy, but it is a great learning experience. I worked the first shot of the sequence to a refined-ish pass. I still have a load to do, but it's getting there:

Facial Refining Pass

And here is the next pass at the face. I added some asymmetry to the mouth, cleaned up to the eyebrows, refined the phonemes and pushed the contrast between the major vowels. Still have PLENTY to do, but one more week and then it's on to the two person dialogue!

Another Polishing Pass

Hey Guys,

Here's another polishing pass of my shot. We had a break last week, but I felt that I'd get a bit of a head start and polish up my shot some more. I added the jaw movement, added/changed the eye animnation and I changed up a few things to simplify and clarify. I feel that it's working better.

Now that the summer quarter has begun, I can start animating the face! I'm really excited to get started. Speaking of the new quarter, I have a new mentor Morgan Kelly. I hope to get a lot out of this class since he has a tone of industry experience and he is also an instructor for Cal Arts. I'm looking forward to this quarter.

Refining/Polishing Pass

Well, here is the the final pass of my monologue shot for class 4. We don't address the face until next quarter. As you can see, I've made some pretty big changes to the beginning... again. As my mentor put it, I did some soul searching and I feel it was for the better. I still have a lot of finessing to do, but this is the final for the quarter.

As for my Professor, Melanie, she had to be one of the coolest mentors I've had at AM. She was full of energy and super motivated to help each and everyone of her students. It was always a blast to go to her classes because of her enthusiasm... and because of all the little melodies she would sing. If anyone reading this blog decides to go to AM, I highly recommenced her as a professor, you will not regret it.

Here is the first spline pass of my monologue shot. As you can see, I know how to make mashed potatoes! because this looks like mush :) Granted, I only had about three days to push this out since I was having an AWESOME time in San Francisco, but no excuses. Hopefully next week I will have a tighter pass... let's hope.

Well, it wasn't easy, but I made my decision on what dialog clip I'm going to animate to. I should of known which one I was going to go with since it was the funnest clip to shoot reference for. So much fun, I'm posting it on my blog.... how embarrassing.

It was a blast and it was the last dialog clip I shot reference for... go figure.

Translating it to animation was just as fun. This is my first blocking pass.

Well, here is the final for "It's Alive!!!" I've learned a tone from this one assignment and I feel that I've jumped leaps and bounds from my last shot. The whole goal was to explore more subtle and naturalistic acting and I feel I'm moving in the right direction. It's not perfect and there is plenty for me to work on, (which I will probably be doing on and off) but it's approved by Mentor, for now. Time for Dialog!

Here is the next pass of my pantomime shot. Due to popular demand, I brought back the kiss. I feel it added a little something. I've also tried to tone down the beginning a bit more. I'm going for more naturalistic acting to contrast with the cartoony acting at the end of the shot. Next pass is the epic journey from stepped to spline tangents... wish me luck.

Hey Everyone,

I'm going to make this a work in progress blog again. So, first off, My mentor is Melanie Cordan and she is..... AWESOME! I feel very fortunate to have a mentor that has a wide variety of experience. Also, she has to be one of the most enthusiastic mentor's I've had at AM and it's terrific. Her energy is threw the roof and it really feels like she want's to push our stuff to the next level. So Excited!

Second, Here is my planning for my first assignment, "It's ALIVE!" The whole point of this exercise is to develop two distinctive emotional beats in a shot. Also, keep it simple and focus on the acting. I had gone threw a range of idea's and came up with these two. After a lot of help from my mentors and my peers I decided to go with the first idea on the video. I felt it had the best contrast in emotions and it would allow me to play with subtle animation, something I haven't explored yet.

Class 3... finished?

Hey Everyone!

How's it going? It's been awhile. And I've been hard at work, at least I would like to say so. Class 3 is Done! and it was a blast. My Professor was Kevin O'Hara and it was a pleasure having him as a mentor. He knew a ton and even better, he studied under James Baxter! (geek moment) He shared with us helpful notes James Baxter would tell him, little pieces of gold, and he would show us clips that motivated and inspired him. It was just great.

As far as the class goes, I felt that I learned a lot. My assignments on the other hand didn't accede my expectations. I had fun with them, but I didn't achieve what I was going for and I'm kind of disappointed with myself, but it's all in the learning process and I'm really thankful for that. Not only did I learn more about how the body works, but I also learned were I should push myself when moving on to class 4: acting. I also learned that it's good to explore your ideas, but when you have one, stick with it. DON'T CHANGE YOUR MIND AT THE LAST MINUTE! I believe that hurt me in the long run. That being said, I feel these were just another part of my animation mileage and I've learned a great deal from them. Anyway, I've rambled on enough. I hope you guys enjoy! :)

Class 2: Done and Done

Well Guys,

Class 2 is just about done. This was a fun quarter and I learned a great deal about body mechanics. I never knew how much work it was until I really got into it. The one major thing I'm taking from this class is the hygiene of a shot. They touched base about it in class one but when there's a full body involved, you really have to make sure every movement in the shot is clean. And when I say movement, I'm talking about the arcs, path of action and also the keys and curves within the curve editor. It's a grueling task and it takes hours but in the end, it's worth it.

Also, my professor Steve Cady was a great teacher. He was very OCD about the poses and the cleanliness of a shot but it really helped in the end. Well, here is my progress reel for class's one and two.

This is the final assignment for Class 2. It was a whole lot of fun and a pretty good challenge. The arms were a pain in the butt at times, but over all I think it is the strongest peace of the quarter. It's funny to see the jumps from blocking to final, a huge difference.

Hey Guys!

It's been awhile. Work has sucked the life out of me for a good month. Now that it's starting to slow down I'm back in action. I started Class Two about a month ago with my newest professor, Steve Cady. He is a really awesome teacher. He's worked at many companies from from small video game studios to huge feature Houses. It's been a blast so far.

Also, this is my latest test: the Side Step. Since I haven't had time to upload my assignment periodically, I'm going to unload it all in one chunk. From Sketches to final. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Hey Everybody!

This is it. All my hard work in a one minute and five second clip. I think it turned out pretty good. There are a few things that you haven't seen yet. The personality walk: Stealth. Week 9 all done! This week was a nice challenge, but not as hard as I thought. I successfully animated a standard or "Vanilla" walk. Aaron seemed to like it, not much critique, which is a good sign. Taylor's Unfortunate Demise

Hey People,

Week 7 over and it was pretty fun. I took on the harder of the two challenges (either a one legged character jumping from A to B or a ball with a tail) and choose taylor... that little rat bastard of a ball squirrel thing. He wasn't that bad to animate, but my time line was riddled with some many red knotches, it look like a bloody mess. :) Anyway, I felt like expressing my love for the furry woodland creature and animating this test. ENJOY!

Hello Again!

A new week and a new post. Here is my recent assignment, The Pendulum test. This was a fun assignment. Ii was much looser before, but my professor told me to tone it down a bit and I think it turned out fairly well. This assignments seems to bring back a bunch of good memories. I hope you enjoy. Devastated about an Obstacle Test

Hello Everybody,

I just finished week 5 and it was a doozy. This was a busy week. We had two new assignments and revisions to finish. Yea, busy busy. Well, it was a success. Aaron seemed to be pleased with my final products. Of course he had some feedback for me, but lucky it was only tweaky stuff. And he likes to give tweaky feedback.

The first assignment was a ball going through an obstacle course following the principles of timing, spacing, squash & stretch, and a little overlap. This was a really fun one and a huge challenge to try to keep it under 120 frames. As you can see, I didn't keep it under the 120 frame mark, but our professor told me that he would rather have a completed assignment that looked finished instead of an assignment that ended up to short.

Assignment #2 was a devastation pose. This is my second devastated pose and it turned out way better then the first. It took me awhile to find the correct position for the right hand, but when I did, it was a eureka moment. It just created a nice s-curve right down the pose and it just felt so much better. Well I'm in week two for Animation Mentor and I'm loving it. The student to student interaction is the best part about it. It's a huge community that is helping one another. It's awesome.

Hooray!! I just had my first class of Animation Mentor with Aaron Hartline and it was amazing!!! We introduced our selves to the whole class and everyone seems down to earth and amped to get started. You guys should go check out Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian! Why? It's the first film that I worked on! I saw it last week and it was pretty funny. Go check it out!

I am really excited to get started. The first class starts June 29th and it's driving me nuts cause I still have to wait over a month. In due time. Anyway, that's the exciting news. Strengthing my Poses.... Corny

Hello People,

My newest pose is ready! I actually used two poses. The one that is on the left (middle) and the one at the very top (leftish). I felt that the bottom one was more dynamic and I felt the one at the top had a better arc in the spine. I believe I accomplished the feeling of this guy using all of his strength to pull something onto the cliff. If you have any feedback, lay it on to me. My next goal is the newest 11 second club challenge and that will be a challenge because I haven't animated a dialogue test in a long while. Also, I will be working on my next pose, Concern. I was going to post last week, but unfortunately, I have lost my internets. The problem should be fixed by tomorrow and I will be up and running with my finished pose :D In the mean time, I leave you with a fun animated short I found online. Hey guys,

One of the first things I'm doing for this blog is a pose test. The pose is excitement. Something to warm me up, help me with my silhouettes and help my over all animation progression. These are just simple thumbnails and the four with the dots are the ones I most favor. Any feedback would be great. I will hopefully post something up in the next couple of days. Talk to you soon!
